Im Roman verliebt er sich in die schöne Widerstandskämpferin Jitka, die mit ihm gemeinsam unerschrocken gegen die Besatzer kämpft. Zugleich versucht er das Rätsel seiner eigenen Identität zu lösen. Mit dem Fest präsentierte die bolschewistische Inszenierungsdiktatur ihre Leistungen und visualisierte die neue gesellschaftliche Ordnung. Festexperten entwickelten »rote« Rituale und Kommissionen planten aufwendige Choreografien. Nach Stalins Tod entideologisierten sich die Feste zunehmend und verlagerten sich in den privaten Raum. Malte Rolfs mehrfach ausgezeichnete Studie verfolgt, wie Regionales, Traditionelles und Privates die zeremoniellen Praktiken prägten und sich mit offiziellen Normen zu einer hybriden Festkultur verbanden. Die Feiertage des roten Kalenders erhielten eine gesellschaftliche Bedeutung, die ihr Weiterleben auch nach dem Ende der Sowjetunion sicherte.
