Tokyo is known as a food-crazed city, maybe even the most food-crazed on earth—but you have to go underground to find the really good stuff. At your average depachika (department store basement food hall), there are more than 30,000 items for sale. These stores function like bustling food cathedrals where you can find everything from sushi-grade hamachi to $150 muskmelons, and endless free samples. At Takashimaya Times Square, there are more than 70 kinds of salt, a vinegar sommelier, and 120 food outlets occupying 2,700 square feet, and it isn’t even the biggest depachika in Tokyo.
America has seen its fair share of successful department stores through the years. Most people will remember shopping at ‘Kmart.’ The store was a feature of many strip malls in the 80s and 90s. Do you remember anything you purchased on ‘The Blue Light Special?’ Unfortunately, there are only 3 Kmarts left in the country.

Western Pennsylvania Autumn Went on the tour, Frank Lloyd Wright was a geniusl. Drove by many times and never stopped and sure glad we did. What a magnifient structure. The Kaufmann's (The Kaufmann department store people from Pittsburgh, now replaced by Macy's. Oh how I miss Kaufmann's} asked Wright to build them a vacation place away from the city. They wanted to spend 25 large and the finished work ended up being a wopping $150,000. WOW! Hard to get a dump in the city for that much huh?. Upon completion of the house it ws priceless. Wright's unique approach to architecture included making the dwelling and living space blend with the outdoors and nature. As Fallingwater is his best example to this approach. He not only tryes to fit the home on the hillside against the flowing stream, but he incorporates the hillside and wter INTO and through the home. i.e., some large rocks weren't removed, they were included in the construction and the running water and waterfalls????? forget about it. Awesome place. I recomment check it out if you haven't already or at least read up a bit about the place, the artist and his works. The master of congruent angles I believe. His love of nature and the outdoors is so evidenced in this building by the large outdoo terraces, actually larger than the living space and rooms. So interesting. 150 grand? Absolutely priceless.

This 1950's newspaper advertisement for suits is a great showcase for fashion designer Gilbert Adrian. This regional ad appeared in 1951 while he was at the very height of his career as a fashion designer with a salon that catered to Hollywood's young and fabulous. The fashion illustration is drawn to capture all of the style details that Adrian was famous for, in a layout that uses two suits in different scale, thus calling attention to the larger image. As was common at the time, the artist is not credited. The silhouette for these suits is very slim, with some shoulder emphasis. Most women were choosing soft shoulders at this time, and the look shown here would not last much longer. These suits resemble the featured suit by Adrian posted earlier here. It is helpful in showing what the skirt must have looked like, along with fashionable accessories of the early 1950's. The decorative seamlines that integrate darts and a close body fit are signature for Adrian, who was a master of pattern design by this time. While his suits would seem to be 'simple', upon closer examination, they are fitted with creative seam lines that departed from the usual bust darts for fit. He was also using custom made striped textiles and exploring the optical illusion and mitred lines in his work. The ad copy reads: "British Samer...unsurpassed fabric achieving its perfect conclusion in these Adrian suits. Solid colors as well as a variety of intriguing weaves. $230" department store: Robinson's of California." In current economy, this price tag would be over $2,000.
