Knowing that so many of us are teaching and creating remotely, I thought it would be fun to do a little art teacherin' online. I shared yesterday all of the resources of mine that are free and able for you to use if you need to prepare art lessons for at home artists. However, I wanted to create something fresh and new and do a little LIVE art teaching as well. So...here's what I came up with: Robot Week! What's Robot Week? Well, it will be a daily dose of creating centered around the theme of Robots. I'll kick it off on Monday this this lesson that I'll be doing LIVE but I will also attempt to archive to my YouTube channel. For this first LIVE, I'll probably go for about 30-45 minutes. We'll just play it by ear. If you and your young artists can make it, great! You can join me on my Facebook page here or on my Instagram here! Big thanks to our sponsor Dixon Ticonderoga for joining the fun! Free How to draw Robots resource for you! To practice, inspire or color! In my art room, we call these Idea Sheets. This one is yours here! Mitch said I should make y'all a coloring sheet...so here you go! On Tuesday, I won't be live but I will be posting a video on how to create robots that look more three-dimensional on my YouTube channel! Again, simple supplies can be used or swapped out for whatever you have on hand. I am super stoked about this one, stay tuned! I know we probably all have a couple of cereal or snack boxes laying around. For that reason, why not try your hand at a collagraph rubbing? It's when you cut and glue shapes to a surface, lay a piece of paper on top and then, using a "sleeping" crayon (one on its side), rub over your design. I then added a watercolor wash to some of mine! It's a Build-Your-Own-Bot kind of Wednesday! What to do with that cereal box collage? Well, on Thursday, I'll show you how to cover it in foil and make a print with just markers and water! Oh yeah, this one's magical! On the final day of Robot Week, we'll make a collage with one of my favorite papers to collage with: business envelopes! They have the coolest patterns and designs. I do hope you'll join the fun! If you do, I would love to see what you and your awesome artists create. You can email me your images at [email protected] and I'll try to feature them right here!

15 CRAFTY WAYS TO RECYCLE LEFTOVER CARDBOARD BOXES
The origins of this art lesson came from a pin that I found on Pinterest connecting to the blog B Art Z - Elementary Art. I have been SO excited to blog about my new and improved cup weaving lesson! So last year I attempted to do cup weaving with my some of my students.. and while I loved the results.. the process was infuriating! For some reason I thought it was a great idea to weave with plastic cups - which made sharp jagged edges when cut by children. When that didn't go smoothly I thought myself sooooo clever to switch to styrofoam cups - which ended up making spokes (warp strips) that snapped off when pulled on to much. FINALLY I figured it out - PAPER CUPS!! These work PERFECTLY!! It is easy for the kids to cut the strips themselves AND they are surprisingly very durable. **Get them in bulk here! The first thing I had my kids do was write their name on the bottom of their cup with a sharpie. Then they placed their upside-down cup onto a template I created and made a tick mark on the rim of the cup everywhere where they saw a triangle poking out - this gave them evenly spaced points to cut from. When cutting out the spokes/warp strips, it is extremely important to remember to cut out an odd number of strips so that when you are weaving your AB pattern, the pattern alternates each consecutive time around. I found that with the 9oz cups my kids were using, 9 strips turned out to be the perfect number. Once the strips were cut, students double-knotted a piece of yarn to one of the strips, then began weaving! This particular class worked for 5 days straight on this (they really are a wonderful group).. and I had a few students who even completed 3 very well done cups in this amount of time (a couple even got pulled for our county art show)! :)

Laura @inspiremyplay Founder of @inspiremyplay, Early Years teacher for 11 years and mummy to three gorgeous girls. I'm passionate about about the benefits of play in early childhood. This is the perfect activity for anyone who’s lawn has been left just a bit too long without a mow! It’s really simple to prepare using a circle of cardboard and a pencil to create some holes. You can then thread the dandelions through the holes to create the lion’s mane. This activity is so good for fine motor skills and a great little boredom buster! The Benefits of Natural Resources for Creative and Sensory Play Natural materials are great to include in a child's sensory play. They encourage children to closely observe and explore the world around them and use all their senses since they have a variety of textures, scents, sizes, colours, and sounds. Loose objects like twigs, flowers, leaves, shells, and sand are all readily available open-ended materials which can be used on their own or combined with other items to foster creativity and imagination. While playing with natural materials, children are engaged in decision making and problem-solving opportunities. Natural materials can be taken apart, put back together again, combined, moved, and lined up. By exploring, manipulating, arranging, designing, stacking, and building with the materials in a variety of ways, children are able to be artistic, explore, design and collaborate. Natural resources inspire outdoor play and exploration and can also be found in natural surroundings. Exposure to nature gives children opportunities to discover and explore new things, solve problems, take risks, unleash their creativity and develop a sense of wonder. Dandelion Threading For this activity we took a circular piece of cardboard with holes in it and walked around our back garden collecting dandelions to create a lions mane. Cut a piece of cardboard into a circle; Using a pencil, punch holes around the edge of the cardboard and draw a lions face using marker pen; Then let your child collect as many dandelions as they want to thread through the holes to create the lions mane. Other Nature Play Ideas Natural materials can be used in a variety of ways for learning activities. Toddlers and preschoolers absolutely love combining art and craft with nature so if you are looking for more ideas you could try: Leaf printing. This is a great kid's activity. It can be combined with a nature walk to collect the leaves and even a bit of fine motor practice with a pair of scissors to cut them off the tree. A nature colour hunt is the perfect spring or summer activity to get kids outdoors and appreciating the world around them. A nature treasure hunt. Gofindit is a nature treasure hunt that encourages kids to explore the natural world. It's great for taking on walks, trips to the beach or for playing in the garden. Read our full review here. Today I'm sharing another beautiful and easy paper plate craft. These paper plate birds are simply gorgeous. They are also a great art and craft project to make with kids of all ages! Paper Plate Bird Craft This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! I hosted a play date with 5 other children this past summer and wanted to give them a small art activity to do. The kids' ages ranged from 18 months - 4 years old, so the activity had to be simple to set up and easy for all the kids to do. That's when I came up with these paper plate birds! The kids really enjoyed painting them and the activity was so easy to set up the night before. Everyone took home their birds. But we enjoyed the activity so much that we recently painted birds again as a family. Here's how we made these lovely paper plate birds! Let's Make some Paper Plate Birds! First, I folded a paper plate in half. I traced out half a bird shape. Then, I folded the wings over and stapled the bottom of the bird closed. Here's what the bird looked like when opened: To get these super vibrant colors, we used our favorite liquid watercolors. Prior to painting some of the birds, we also drew designs on them with yellow and white crayons. These designs were "revealed" when we painted over the birds. My husband saw how much fun we were having that he had to join in too! Here are some birds that he and I painted alongside our son. Our Favorite Kids Bird Picture Books And if you're looking for some great bird picture books to go along with this project, here are some that we've enjoyed reading!
