This chart is just for the main design across the chest, and is not a complete sweater pattern. A Ravelry user asked if I could provide a chart for the gansey I knit - I figured the easiest thing to do was just to make a free PDF download of it. The motifs are all traditional, and I knit the sweater from looking at photos of vintage ones and from perusing Beth Reinsel-Brown’s book Knitting Ganseys. If you feel like adapting/unventing, go for it. You can adapt it to any drop-shoulder sweater, or use Reinsel-Brown’s book for instructions on how to knit a traditional gansey like this one, with underarm gussets and a split hem.
Done!!! just in time for xmas….and very proud I am too. Only problem is that my other sons seem a bit jealous….. This is a well explained traditional gansey pattern. For Ben’s shape, however, it might have been better if I cast on fewer stitches for the body and increased before the yoke pattern, as he is skinny but has wide shoulders. Maybe he will grow into it….. I could also have done a little bit of shaping for the neck. I made the sleeves narrower by decreasing every 4th row all the way down as well as decreasing one in 12 at the start of the net pattern and one in 10 stitches before the cuff ribbing…ending up with only 66 stitches for a nice fitted cuff. The neck band is in 2 by 2 rib and each stitch is knit into the back of the stitch which I did with 2.25mm needles….poor fingers! now to pick up the stitches for the first sleeve. Will I ever finish it for xmas? Instead of grafting the shoulder straps - this navy is almost black after all - I have cheated and done a 3 needle bind off october 2013. got the gansey out again and back on track. Nearly up to the neck. Started the pattern and the gusset and so happy to see it grow. Just a little bit more and begin the pattern….time to make our minds up. april 2013. Kit arrived!! cast on immediately. The cast on and the first five rows were VERY fiddly indeed as you have to use two strands together on tiny pointed needles. Ben wants basicly the Whitby design with an extra band of Scottish Fleet design. With the help of other ravelers’ knowledge, research was fun and really interesting.
