He was a cosmic force that could never be completely vanquished, only defeated from one encounter until the next. With the help of many of the other gods, Ra battled him each night in order to rise again the next morn. He was not only the enemy of Ra, the sun god, but also Ma'at - the goddess of order. Apep was said to have come into existence when the goddess Neith spat into the waters of Nun. Another myth credits his creation as being a natural consequence to Ra's creation and that he formed from Ra's umbilical cord. He was said to have the body of a serpent and a head made of flint. He was never worshiped - only feared. He represented the possible end to all life, the possible end of the world if Ra could not defeat him. He was known also as 'the enemy' and 'the evil lizard'. He could not be reasoned with and was associated with terrifying natural phenomena like earthquakes, eclipses and storms. He was also sometimes considered the 'eater of souls' and the dead were often buried with protections against him as well. Because he was said to lie in wait for Ra below the horizon, he was sometimes said to reside in the after-world. *Frames not included*
